The 3rd Annual Urban Manufacturing Alliance Convening brought together UMA Members who are the top practitioners and thinkers working to promote and grow urban manufacturing.
Close to 100 economic development practitioners and manufacturers from 28 cities gathered in Philadelphia from October 15th-17th to share best practices and tools on how to support and grow local manufacturing at the 3rd Annual National Convening of the Urban Manufacturing Alliance. Many attendees said it was the best convening yet, with amazing break-out sessions and inspiring speakers.
The convening was kicked off with a welcome from Philadelphia Deputy Mayor Alan Greenberger and Councilmember Oh at Reading Terminal, after touring two successful local manufacturers – Agusta Westland, a helicopter manufacturer, and Northeast Building Products, a leading manufacture of energy efficient windows – to see what is happening in urban manufacturing in Philly.
Congressman Chaka Fattah started the second day with his keynote address about “The Powerful Impact of Urban Manufacturing.” The rest of the convening was broken into a series of member-facilitated interactive sessions, from understanding how we can support makers to grow into manufacturers movement to training youth in apprenticeships with manufacturers. We talked about millenials approach to manufacturing, investing for small manufacturers, and the art of non-profit industrial real estate development.
On the closing morning, Mayor Michael Nutter gave an impassioned, personal speech about Philadelphia and its role as the “workshop of the world”.
